Driving a 1400+ hp lag missile weighing 590 kilos (2500 hp/ton). Wheelspin in fourth. The turbo cars of the 80s were a far cry from today’s relatively civilised track stars.
The video starts with S ir Jackie Stewart giving a wonderful walkthrough on the car’s controls and the lifespan of a qualifying engine.

I’ve been watching some old F1 race replays on YouTube. They’re great. Fun seeing Prost and Senna duke it out.

I rem em ber an interview with one of the top driver back in the days - can’t remem ber who or when, but he was talking about one of Silverston e’s slow corners as being the most satisfying for a driver of the whole F1 season, because you basically floored the throttle as you did your last downshift under braking, then prayed ; if you’d timed it just right, boost started to come in exactly as you hit the apex and you rode the power curve all the way out in a glorious rocket l aunch that matched the friction limit perfectly , and if you got it wrong you spun or bogged . No excuses, no corrections, just instinct and split second timing: do, or do not.
It wasn’t ju s t the engines that were consumable in “grenade spec” either. I had a mate from uni versity who work ed for Avon Tyres in their racing division, and he showed me a souvenir he’d snaffled from Benetton: a driveshaft that had done one pole-gaining lap. It was twisted almost 360 degrees along its length. Apparently the entire powertrain was throwaway after a maximum attack quali lap .

I’d love to see a picture of that driveshaft. Crazy.

I’m going to watch that documentary right before I go to sleep. Thanks.

I can visualise EXACTLY how well that cornering technique would work out for me...

Likewise. Having driven a few turbo cars back in the days when boost was something that happened by appointment only, I can imagine doing that, and I’ve even attacked c orners vaguely similarl y, albeit at 10% of the horse power and speed. B ut the real event would involve me mashing the throttle then skip straight to me sitting in the kitty litter wo ndering what just happened.
This encapsulates the differenc e between track and rally driving for me. I can watch an F1 driver and grasp what they ’re doing, even though I couldn’t begin to do it myself: it’s “ just” regular driving turned up 1000% . Whereas I have no fricking idea how the WRC guys stay on the road.

Having a few times pretended I can rally drive in the company vehicle...I can attest to the power of practice. Mostly in terms of how an unsealed road ‘feels’ at a ridiculous speed, how not to overdo the control inputs and how not to automatically defecate when things inevitably go wrong...

The general idea of sliding around on a gravel road I’m fine with - my first crash was due to trying to learn the Scandinavian Flick in my mum’s Fiat, in the hills above the to w n I grew up in (though oddly enough, that wasn’t what I told her), and the 86 is becoming quite famili ar with gett ing stones spat up its hindquarters. It’s the driving miles beyond your visibility relyi ng on pace notes, and the sheer level of d isconnect between vehicle attitude and intended direction, that I can’t wrap my head around. It’s almost like they’re drivi ng a hovercraft, at times.

a coworkers brother used to work for renault sport in the 80s. He was mostly rally but got c alled to other series for teardowns. the number of engines and transmissions they would go through would be nuts. Rally drivers wouldn’t lift when shifting and transmissions were treated as disposible. They’d open it up and just have teeth falling out.
In the video I linked, lotus would go to a race with 8 engines.

Oh yeah...hearing that. Having actually driven a hovercraft, I can strongly relate to the analogy too. I fitted that into an inappropriate piece of landscape as well...
